First edition of this biography of Pope Adrian VIth ( Adriaan Floriszoon Boeyens - Utrecht 1459 - Rome 1523). He was the only pope of pre-modern times to be elected outside the Italian circles, born in the Netherlands ( Low Countries) , he was the teacher of Charles Vth ( Charles Quint), emperor of the Holy Empire, studied and became professor at Louvain university and had Erasmus among his students. In 1520, in the absence of Charles Vth , he was appointed Regent of Spain. His short tenure as pope ( 12 months) and the enormous political problems with which he was confronted prevented him of stopping the spread of Luther's ideas.
