Dans cette étude il traite longuement de la combinaison et de la juxtaposition des couleurs. C'est, avec l' "Optique physiologique" de Helmholtz, (1867), l'un des grands livres sur la physiologie de la vision du XIXe siècle. Illustré par 46 figures intercalées dans le texte.
