‎Edition originale française. Cet ouvrage de Thomas Brown (1605-1682) avait déjà été publié en latin à Londres en 1642. Tour à tour sceptique et naïf, Sir Thomas Brown est avant tout un platonicien ; le monde selon lui n'est qu'une image, une ombre de la réalité. Cette considération l'amène à pratiquer une tolérance quasi-totale, et si par instant la religion lui apporte secours et apaisement, il recours à ses bienfaits, si par contre celle-ci ne peut répondre à ses angoisses ou ses questionnements, il en appelle alors à la raison. Son livre ressemble dans une certaine mesure à une flânerie philosophique. Utilisant volontiers les associations d'idées, il explore tous les possibles qui s'offrent à son esprit. C'est pourquoi Geoffrey Keynes, dans sa bibliographie de Sir Thomas Brown publiée en 1924, qualifie l'écriture ce dernier de propos universel. Cet ouvrage, mis à l'Index par Rome et condamné au feu, figure dans le Printing and the Mind of Man sous le numéro 131.Un livre interdit et détruit, de la plus insigne rareté, dont on serait bien en peine de trouver des exemplaires passés en vente dans les dix dernières années. ‎

[Blaeu] 1668 1 vol. relié in-18, demi-cuir de Russie rouge, dos lisse orné de filets dorés, papier rouge sur les plats, non rogné, (22) + 360 pp. Première édition française de ce classique de la littérature britannique, bien complète du joli titre-frontispice gravé. Dans cette autobiographie spirituelle qui est un chef d'oeuvre de scepticisme, le médecin Thomas Browne (1605-1682) digresse librement sur le dogmes et la morale chrétienne, affirmant sa foi en marge de toute église. Paru d'abord en anglais en 1642, puis en latin en 1644, Religio Medici fut mis à l'index par Rome en 1645. La présente version française est due à Nicolas Le Febvre et sort des presses de Blaeu à Amsterdam [Brunet, I, 1281]. Séduisante reliure de la Révolution ou de l'Empire, malgré quelques défauts (trous de ver à la charnière supérieure, petite auréole à 5 ff.).‎

‎ Première édition française. Le plus singulier des écrivains du XVIIème siècle, Thomas Brown nous livre une confession conduite selon les plus fugaces associations d'idées. Tour à tour crédule et sceptique, l'auteur y donne son opinion sur les dogmes et la morale chrétienne. Esprit avant tout tolérant, il se déclare prêt à révérer toute autre religion. Sa curiosité s'étend à toutes sortes de choses : des anthropophages, des Esprits, du combustible utilisé en Enfer... Il demande la liberté de se laisser guider par sa seule raison, pour tout les sujets sur lesquels l'enseignement de l'Eglise n'apporte rien. Le livre a été mis à l'Index. Joli frontispice gravé. ‎ Un verset du sixième chapitre de la Genèse inspira l’idée de "The loves of the angels" à Moore, en même temps qu’il donna à Byron le motif d’un poème. Le mystère de lord Byron ("Heaven and Earth, a mystery") parut peu de temps avant que Moore ne publie son poème. Deux poètes amis écrivant sur le même sujet, voici ce qui explique la présence du poème de Moore dans une reliure dédiée à Byron, de même que la présence ici de "Rhymes on the road" s'explique par la dédicace à Byron. L'Age de bronze, est la satire du congrès de Vérone (1822), quant à "The vision of judgment" c'est une réponse satirique (écrite sous le nom de Quevedo "recyclé", poète espagnol du XVIIe siècle, connu pour ses satires tranchants) à la Vision du Jugement de Robert Southey publié en 1820 à la mémoire de George III. 3 texte de Byron, 2 de Moore. ‎

The four extra plates are. [1] Orbis Roma by Antonius Goebouvv - reproduced in De Bie's ''Gulden Cabinet''. [2] Nicolas Bruyant, - Van Dyck pinxit, P. Pontius sculp. Meyssens exc. [3] Adriaen Brouwer, - Robert Smith sculps. [4] Richard Collin (born 1627 Luxembourg) portrait name ''Rciahdr Cloiln'' (sic). Bound in contemporary full leather,(binding worn, joints partly split , but still holding). Interior fine, no stains or foxing. Quite large paper copy ( height 319 mm ). The second title page (in French) pertains to an Antwerp edition by Jean Meyssens, dated 1649. The first 100 plates in our album derive from this edition. E.G. The first 22, identically numbered in upper right corner, are all engraved by TH. Galle , and some bear still the name of D. Lampsonius. Lampsonius was the first ,in 1572, to compile an album with portraits of famous painters. Provenance: On the title page a handwritten note : ''The gift of Tho[ma]s Carew Esqr. to Richard Phelps, 1748.. The painter Richard Phelps (c.1710-1785) trained with Thomas Hudson and worked in Somerset (Porlock) producing portraits mainly of local families. The British Museum holds an album of his work which contains a portrait of Thomas Carew. Interesting portrait album illustrating the great influence , in the wake of Van Dyck, in Dutch-Flemish portrait painting in 18th c. England.‎
