1727 2 engraved title-pages, engraved dedication page, 4 engraved pages of text (biographies of Bossuit and Graat), 1 engraved index-page, 82 (of 89) engraved pls (they are numbered 9-103, but six are double numbered when depicting two subjects on one plate), 2 engraved portraits (Bussuit and Graat), 4to, contemporary red half calf, boards covered in typical Dutch 18th century speckled (kievitsmarmer) paper. Spine somewhat rubbed, with 5 raised bands and small gilt flowers in compartments, one (of two, one missing) yellowish labels with gilt title. Repair to lower end of one joint, first free end paper with some faint stains and some repaired tears. First title-page browned. Seven plates are missing (nos 89-93 and 101-102). Wide margins. Good quality engravings on thick paper and one-side printed only. The whole book, including the text, is engraved. Rare first and only edition of a collection of beautiful engravings illustrating the sculptures of the Flemish sculptor Francis Bossuit (Brussels 1635 - Amsterdam 1692), who was famous for his ivory sculptures. At first he worked in Italy but later came to work in Holland. Several of the sculptures depicted in this book still exist and can be seen in some of the larger European museums.

Complete. All plates printed on recto side of leaf only. Bound in contemporary half roan, marbled boards, roan with severe traces of use, inner upper joint cracked but still holding. Still a fine/good copy with the engravings printed on strong paper with wide margins. First edition of a collection of engravings illustrating the sculptures of the Flemish sculptor Francis Bossuit (Born in Brussels 1635 died Amsterdam 1692). He was famous for his ivory sculptures. During his youth and after he lived and worked in Italy. He was brought to Holland by Bonaventura van Overbeek . Some of the sculptures represented here are identified and can be traced in famous collections. E.g. Plate X (David sees Bathseba , Wallace collection). Plate XXIII (Adonis death , Rijksmuseum).
