First monograph on this Belgian artist. In his work, Vincent Geyskens examines the position of painting in contemporary society. Abstraction, figuration, a variety of media and styles of painting are engaged with as he probes their possibilities and limits. For an artist, painting is a way of turning thoughts into something tangible, translating them into substance. The exhibition at M will place the spotlight on the breadth of his experience and will gather together diverse series and types of work produced over the course of his oeuvre. The focus will be on his output during the past ten years, complemented by a number of older reference works. The exhibition forges links between various approaches and gives voice to his quest as a painter for the status of the image and visual representation in the present day. M is displaying not only collages, sketches, and painted series of frames, but also paintings that range from still lifes and portraits to abstract colour compositions with thickly applied paint. The publication will also zoom in on his practical work over the past ten years, bringing together various series in free-ranging connection with one another. Dominic van den Boogerd has written an explanatory article on his recent work, while Eva Wittocx has interviewed the artist about his choices and thought processes. The book is amply illustrated. Marlene Dumas (b.1953) is a South African-born, Amsterdam-based painter, and an internationally admired artists. Dumas recalls in her work the painterly gestures of Expressionism, whilst combining the critical distance of Conceptual art with the pleasures of eroticism. Through her delicately painted oil-on-canvas or ink-and-watercolour depictions of the female form as well as portraits of children and erotic scenes, she comments on the state of painting today. What does it mean to be a woman working within the predominantly male genre of expressionist painting? The artist often depicts women: their expressions, their body and facial typologies, their self-image, their ideals. The relationships between art and female beauty ? or between art-historical models and twentieth-century supermodels ? are constant themes in her work. Dumas does not paint from life but deliberately chooses ?stock? images from a variety of sources, from magazine cuttings to picture postcards to Old Master paintings, as re-observed through her contemporary perspective. Since the late 1970s she has exhibited widely, with solo exhibitions at the Tate Gallery, London (1996), the Museum f r Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (1998), the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Antwerp (1999), the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2002), the New Museum, New York (2002), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2008) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2008). Dutch art critic Dominic van den Boogerd surveys themes in Dumas? work in relation to a range of conceptual legacies in depictions of the human figure. New York artist Barbara Bloom interviews Dumas on questions contemporary women artists are asked, from issues of intellectual process to the representation of the self. Art journalist and former Editor of Vogue Italia Mariuccia Casadio focuses on Dumas? painting Josephine (1997), reflecting on the iconic legacy of Josephine Baker. For her Artist?s Choice Dumas has selected two authors: Oscar Wilde, whose story ?The Fisherman and His Soul? inspired the artist?s early series of works on the theme of mermaids; and Jean Genet, whose autobiography Le Journal du voleur (1949, trans. Thief?s Journal, 1964) is excerpted here. Marlene Dumas has often acted as a spokesperson for her work; the Artist?s Writings section features many such seminal texts on her own art as well as meditations on love, religion, politics, and a discussion of Goya?s painting The Fates. In the Update section art critic Jan Avgikos surveys Dumas? work from 1999 to present.

Bendt Eyckermans (b. 1994) is a young Belgian painter who paints everyday scenes from his own life. However, in the process of painting, he transforms reality into a very personal language: figures, landscapes and objects turn into an almost sculptural parallel world. The book Posture Editions will publish, unfolds like an artichoke. As the heart of the book consists of a series of reproductions of the paintings, the reader has to peel off fragments of text and fragments of the painting's details to reach it. This layered approach seeks to highlight the depth in the artist?s works. The combination of pages with large, sharp details, pages with entire paintings, the sketchbooks and gouaches guides the reader into Eyckermans?s bizarre, but also recognizable world.

Exosition catalogue; In her short life, Ilse D'Hollander (1968-1997) created an intelligent, sensual and highly resonant body of work. Born in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, in 1968, graduating from the Hoger Instituut voor Beeldende Kunsten, St Lucas, Gent, in 1991, D'Hollander was steadfastly committed to painting as an intellectual and emotional endeavour. Her often small-scale canvases and works on paper are charged with references to the everyday. Yet, enlivened by an expressive, though always economical, touch, her work resonates just as strongly as a sustained, self-reflexive enquiry into the act of painting: what it might take to bring an image into being on a bounded, flat plane. **works on paper ans oil.
