The pictures of photographer Benjamin Katz (born 1939) document the preparations for the 1992 DOCUMENTA IX. He observes artists like A.R. Penck, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Robert Gober or Michelangelo Pistoletto, while they assemble their works for the exhibition or are concentrated on a conversation. Katz has also recorded the various locations in Kassel that were used as exhibition spaces and were altered for this event. The close and friendly relationship Katz had with most of the artists established pictures of an almost intimate quality, always concentrating on the artist behind the work. All pictures from Katz's series ?DOCUMENTA IX before DOCUMENTA IX" are included here.
