1 vol. folio in sheets (570 x 365 mm) of: [2] ff. (f.t., t.), and 67 lithographed plates including 15 on double page. (Freckles on the titles, the rest fresh). Cardboard folder with flaps stored in a lace-up cardboard box, printed cover laminated to the boards, yellow canvas back. Beautiful copy of this impressive atlas devoted to the osteography of cetaceans, by Pierre-Joseph Van Beneden (1809-1894). This Belgian paleontologist and zoologist who studied zoology with Georges Cuvier before becoming a Doctor of Medicine and Science, was appointed curator of the Museum in 1931, then obtained the chair of zoology at the University of Louvain in 1836, a position that he held until his death. In 1842, he became a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium, of which he became president in 1881. A specialist in parasites, he published Commensals and parasites in the animal kingdom in 1875. It was towards the end of the 1850s that he began to study whales and other fossil or current marine mammals and published, in collaboration with the French zoologist Paul Gervais, Osteography of Cetaceans, Living and Fossil, consisting of a volume of text and this atlas, composed of 67 plates dealing with paleontology and the identification of intermediate forms among cetaceans. Copy preserved in sheets in its original condition, very fresh.

---- BEL EXEMPLAIRE ---- Troisième édition ---- "Van Beneden went to Paris to study zoology intending to become a professor of zoology at Belgium. Since other professors had already been appointed to these chairs, he accepted the post of professor of zoology at the newly created Catholic University of Louvain on April 1835. Van Beneden's contribution to zoology concern most animal phyla and are characterized by the importance given to embryology in the recognition of systematic affinities. He was a naturalist whose curiosity extended to the broadest spectrum of animal species. His main contribution, however, was the discovery of the life cycle of the cestodes...".
