Gravure 350 mm x 195 mm. Dimensions totales : 460 mm x 300 mm.

Collijn 292. Amund Grefwe (ca. 1610-1677), was the first printer in Göteborg. He studied Latin at the University of Uppsala and was the author of a few minor works. He began his printing career in Uppsala working for Professor Wallius's private press and later for Laurentius Paulinus Gothus. Grefwe moved to Stockholm, where he worked for the royal translator Ericus Schroderus and when he moved back to his place of birth in Nyköping Grefwe goes with him. In 1646 he was offered a job in Göteborg. When he had finished the work on ""Carionis Chronika"" he moved to Göteborg in 1650. He was not satisfied with the promised conditions and complained to the Governor of Västergötland. In 1653 he was given priviliges by Queen Kristina, which allowed him to publish and sell his own works and also scholarly books. In 1650 he published the first book printed in Göteborg: "" Christelige Gåfwors Apoteek.""

London: Keating and Brown 1833
Brown paper wrappers, printed in black to the front cover. Sewn. Largely uncut. The brown wrappers are clean, but there is chipping to the spine, and a tear to perhaps a third of the length of the spine. Internally very clean and tidy throughout, with just a touch of darkening to the closed page edge. The first of the 4 issues (1833-1837). Includes papers on the work in Ceylon (relief of the Catholics, lists of the Catholic churches), St Lucia, Demerara, abolition of slavery, and the proposals for forming the "British Catholic Society for the Promotion of the Knowledge of Christianity". Included is a long letter from Lord Clifford, which discusses that he will be attending Rome with his Father in Law (Cardinal Weld). 80pp.
London Printed for the proprietor; and sold by Wetton and Jarvis 1818
First edition. Scarce. Hardback mottled boards with paper title label. Part of the title page is printed in gilt letters. Boards are quite rubbed, and the front board is a little loose but holding well. Inside the book has some age toning but is otherwise good. viii, 136 pp. With illustrated frontis. 230 x 140 mm (9 x 5œ inches). Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (1796 - 1817) was the only child of George, Prince of Wales, and his wife, Caroline of Brunswick. Charlotte was to ascend the British throne after the deaths of her grandfather, George III and her father, but died in childbirth - at the tender age of 21.
London: Joseph Booker, No. 61, New Bond Street 1825
First edition. A very nice copy of this ephemeral item. A single sheet, printed and folded into eight pages - uncut. There is a little foxing to the sheet, and a fractional darkening to the page edges. Clear and clean type. An anonymous essay, looking at the "Roman Catholic Question" following the Union of Great Britain with Ireland. 8 pp. Single sheet, folded and uncut.
London: W. Knowles 1866
First edition. Pamphlet. 8vo, Contents clean and bright. Caption title, p [1]. A statement supporting the foundation of a college in England in honour of the Sacred Heart to support the foreign missions. Copac locates only one copy at Durham. The college was founded in 1866 at Mill Hill and went on to become the foundation house of the Mill Hill Missionaries - and order still in existence. [2], [1] ii-iv, [1] 2-42. pp
London: Burns and Lambert 1854
First Edition. Pamphlet. 8vo. Title page slightly darkened with a small closed tear and a couple of ink spots to the margin. Otherwise a clean copy. Recent paper wrappers. In 1853, Mr Chambers was given leave by parliament to introduce a bill to the Commons. The premise of the bill ('A bill to facilitate personal liberty in certain cases') gave wide access to a panel of commissioners to enter Roman Catholic convents with the aim of securing the freedom of those held there against their will. Catholics viewed this as a scurrilous anti-Catholic attack, and denied that any nuns were prisoners. They viewed the legislation as a reaction to the recent restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. The list of signatories to the rear begins with the Lords, whose names are led by Charles H Clifford & Francis Stonor.
London John Norton for Joyce Norton 1633
A nice copy of this two volume work, unfortunately lacking the title page to Volume I. The volume starts on gather A. Original full leather boards, with a touch of bumping / edgewear to the boards. Recent spine with titles and date to the spine. There is a little water staining to the work, particularly to the edges, and a slight nicking to the edges of the blank front end paper. Some darkening / foxing, again particularly to the edges. Owner's inscriptions to the inside front board and to the 2nd end paper. (IWe think what is laid in as the first end paper is a later addition, when the spine was replaced - the second end paper appears from condition and inscriptions to be the original one). Also lacking is leaf 3I2 (page 99/100) with the text here also lacking. Bizarrely, a full page plate, dating from 1814 has been laid in to face page 275. This is an engraving by Wm Craig and L. Brown, showing national liberty crushing the nations of Europe. This is perhaps laid in here as it is opposite an homily against Disobedience and Wilfull rebellion. This long homily, published in various forms, is important, as it was part of the celebrations following the failure of the rebellions against Queen Elizabeth I. To the end of the work is "A thankesgiving for the suppression of the last rebellion." 1-98, [vi], 1-98 101-320 [iv]. 290 x 210 mm (11œ x 8Œ inches).
