‎This work marks the beginning of scientific teratology. First edition, illustrated with altogether 36 (21 folding) engraved plates, complete. Haller himself esteemed this work as among his best productions. In fine contemporary full calf bindings. “The numerous plates contain his highly exact, clear, and striking representations of anatomical preparations” (Eimas). “With the many scientific corrections which Haller was able to present to anatomists, owing to his exact investigations and to his studies under Albinus, he was bound to make pictorial representations of anatomic preparations the main object of his care. His illustrations are therefore very numerous. They are very clear, vivid, highly exact, and artistic. The greater part of them had been scattered through his many writings and these were later collected by Haller himself under the title «Opera minora...». ‎Première édition française des poésies du grand savant bernois Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) traduites en prose par son concitoyen Vinzenz Bernhard de Tscharner (1728-1778).« Haller est le « Pope de l'Allemagne » pour Fréron. Il rencontre des juges bienveillants et même des admirateurs enthousiastes. Goethe prétendit un jour - c'était aussi l'opinion de Condorcet - que la renommée du savant avait beaucoup contribué au succès du poète en Europe. Haller a bientôt ses fanatiques ; le conseiller Trudaine se met à l'étude de l'allemand en l'honneur de Haller. Saint-Lambert le lit, Roucher l'imite dans ses Mois, et l'on trouvera sinon des réminiscences fidèles, du moins l'influence de Haller dans les pages où l'auteur de la Nouvelle Héloïse va célébrer le monde alpestre. ‎Quatrième édition, la meilleure édition et la plus complète. L'ouvrage contient en préambule un «Discours préliminaire sur la Constitution du Corps helvétique». C'est l'oeuvre de Vincent Tscharner (1728-1778), un des Bernois les plus cultivés de son temps et de Gottlieb Emmanuel de Haller (1735-1786), bibliothécaire et bibliographe, fils du fameux savant bernois Albert de Haller. En fait il s'agit ici d'un recueil d'articles concernant la Suisse de l'«Encyclopédie» de Félice, qui parut à Yverdon 1770-1776. Notre édition de 1788, en 3 volumes, fut retraduite en français, par Paul-Henri Mallet, d'après l’édition de Berne faite en 1782-83. Nous avons rajouté la carte, non reliée. Importantes recherches de Haller sur la formation des os. Le premier des deux mémoires dont se compose l'ouvrage, contient les expériences réalisées par M. Detlef, protecteur et élève de Haller, en partie sous ses propres yeux. Le second, expose les expériences de Haller lui-même sur des poulets à différents stades de leur développement, et ses réflexions et hypothèses sur la physiologie de ce phénomène. Dans une note au bas de la page 240, Haller fait allusion à une "Table" contenant ses observations sur les accroissements des os, qui "étant trop grande pour le volume de ce mémoire a été imprimée à part". Cette "Table" qui manque souvent figure bien dans le présent exemplaire. Quelques rousseurs. Papier bruni. Bel exemplaire. ‎

‎Médecin et écrivain suisse, Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) fut le disciple le plus fameux d'Herman Boerhaave. Protestant fervent, capable de lire la bible en latin, en grec ou en hébreu, il s'attaqua fortement aux attaques de Voltaire contre la religion. He came to this studies through his investigations of the human gonads (he gave the first correct description of the rete testis, to which the designation Halleri is added in his honor). He then took up the chief generative problem of his time : the origin of the new individual... Haller began systematic investigations on hatching chicken eggs and, following the example of Harvey, on mammals. He made important specific discoveries in embryology. He was able to correct an error of Malpighi, who thought that he had observed a passageway connecting the right and left ventricles in the embryonic chickheart. He was further able to refute Jean Mery by showing that the blood flows from right to left through the foramen ovale in the interatrial septum and he perceived correctly that the branches of the unbilical vein leading into the fetal liver correspond to the branches of the portal vein in later development... He described with great accuracy the vascular system that supplies the bones... Haller's most important finding in embryology again shows his statistical bias ; he was able to devise a numerical method to demonstrate the rate of growth of the fetal body and its parts.
