‎''Ce journal intime, qui ne fut pas toujours régulièrement écrit par son auteur, commence en 1910 et se termine en 1923, peu avant la mort de Kafka. On n'est guère surpris par le climat d'étrangeté qui règne dans ces pages, climat auquel La Métamorphose, entre autres, nous a rendus familiers. Kafka confie ses insomnies, des douleurs physiques qui cessent de s'accentuer au fil du temps, la torture qu'est l'écriture, ses frayeurs devant des pages blanches que le stylo s'obstine à ne pas vouloir noircir. Car l'écriture est bien une souffrance: les mots ne viennent pas comme il voudrait, et sortent aussi difficilement de son imagination que de sa propre bouche. Kafka est un être associable, et qui souffre de l'être. Dans sa famille, il se sent comme un étranger; ses fiançailles, il les a brisées. Le motif en est qu'il n'a pas la moindre chose à dire à ces gens. «Tout ce qui n'est pas littérature m'ennuie et m'est détestable parce que cela m'importune, fût-ce prétendument». Son seul rôle dans la vie: celui de spectateur. Mais Kafka, comme l'attestent ces notes, éprouve des difficultés à se rapprocher des autres non seulement parce qu'il ressent l'inutilité des relations humaines, mais aussi parce qu'il peine à exprimer les affres nébuleux du monde intérieur où il s'enferme, prisonnier de lui-même. La conscience qu'a Kafka de sa propre déchéance physique, de l'approche certaine de sa mort, est claire. Il sait qu'il ne vivra pas longtemps. Sa volonté, faible, l'éloigne de la vie, inexorablement. On peut se demander si cette douleur d'écrire n'est pas enracinée dans ses jeunes années. Que dire de l'indifférence d'un oncle moqueur devant ses premières ébauches stylistiques, cette «chose habituelle», comme il le dit, qui se détourne froidement du grand écrivain, sans un regard, sans un mot? On se réjouit en tous cas de la lecture de ce journal, de sa langue métaphorique, à la poésie enchanteresse. La pensée comme le style sont tortueux, ils font vivre dans le monde intérieur de Kafka, avec ses bizarreries, ses chemins sinueux''. (Cécile Lignereux).
