Maury experimented on himself with two methods of dream investigation. First, he trained himself to write down his dreams as soon as he awoke, and devoted considerable attention to writing down all the circumstances that might have led to each one of them. He was struck by the great sensitivity of his own dreams to any change in diet or in atmospheric conditions. He also believed that he observed that the hypnagogic illusions of hallucinations were furnishing the embryogenesis of the night's dream.
