---- EDITION ORIGINALE ---- BON EXEMPLAIRE ---- HEIRS OF HIPPOCRATES N° 2189 : "Here BINET and FERE have collaborated to write this important early study on their research into animal magnetism or hypnotism. ---- EDITION ORIGINALE ---- EXEMPLAIRE à toutes marges, non rogné, broché avec sa couverture d'origine (défraîchie), bon état intérieur ---- "One of the first opponent to Mesmer". ---- Crabtree N° 116 : "Thouret was a member of the Royal Society of Medicine in Paris and of the leading spokesman of the opposition of that society to animal magnetism and the teachings of Mesmer. In this work Thouret claims that his main concern is not to examine the details of cures being performed by animal magnetism, but to trace the history of the theory and practice of animal magnetism. He nevertheless clearly sides with those who reject animal magnetism as an illusion. Admitting that many persons of stature accept animal magnetism as an effective cure, Thouret uses his considerable crudition to show that such cures are not new and that Mesmer was simply the most recent of a long tradition of thinkers who posited a hidden power of nature produces healing effects. He cites Paracelsus, Kircher, Maxwell, and Fludd as examples of men who held views similar to those of Mesmer. He also points out that there have been many healers over the ages who have accomplished cures resembling Mesmer's mentioning the exorcist Gassner and the stroking doctor Gretrakes as examples. Thouret's learned critique was extremely influential and served as a starting point for much of the discussion at the time about the originality and effectiveness of animal magnetism"5022/F3
P., Dentu, 1825, un volume in 8 relié en demi-basane, dos orné de filets dorés (reliure de l'époque), (coiffes légèrement usées, un mors légèrement fendu), (3), 472pp.
---- EDITION ORIGNALE ---- "DELEUZE, a student of the Marquis de Chastenet de Puységur, succeeded his teacher as head of the mesmerist movement in France, and it was partly due to his intelligent leadership that interest in mesmerism underwent a revival in the first half of the nineteenth century...". (cf. Norman N° M67) ---- Crabtree N° 320 : "One of the most popular manuals for the practice of animal magnetism ever written. Deleuze's instructions are clear and balanced in tone. He emphasizes that animal magnetism is intended to be a source of benefit, a healing power for those in distress. The tone of the manuel is reminiscent of that of Puységur. The good will of magnetizer is of paramount importance to the outcome of the treatment..." ---- Barrucand p. 38 - Ellenberger p. 67**1663/F3

(Barrucand, p. 30 et suivantes) ---- "The Marquis de Puységur was a wealthy, distinguished, and fashionable member of French society. He had early been won over to Mesmer's theories and became his ardent pupil and co-worker... It was while working with mesmerism that he discovered what he called somnambulism which eventually evolved into today's hypnotism". (Heirs of Hippocrates) ---- "Among Mesmer's most enthusiastic disciples were the three brothers De Puysegur. All three three brothers became Mesmer's students and played a role in the history of magnetism... The oldest brother, Armand-Marie-Jacques De Chastenet, sceptical at first above Mesmerism, he was converted to it by his brother Antoine-Hyacinthe and began to give individual and collective treatments on his estate... In France magnetism was taken up around 1805 by Puységur, who published several works on it. Together with those of Mesmer, they were considered for at least one generation as the great classics on the subject...". ---- Les deux ouvrages sont en EDITIONS ORIGINALES ---- BEL EXEMPLAIRE ---- "A foundational work in the history of modern psychology". His treatment became such a popular health care sensation in France that it was as much a social movement as a medical practice. The Ancien régime considered the leaders of the animal magnetism movement to be politically dangerous. The attention Mesmer directed toward hypnosis and suggestion in psychiatry led eventually to its scientific investigation by Braid and others. It also led to the more scientific development of suggestion in treatment, which has been termed after him "mesmerism". Following an enquiry instituted by Louis XVI, Mesmer's career came to an abrupt end" ---- Heirs of Hippocrate N° 1013 - PMM N° 225 - Honeyman N° 2218 - Norman N° M4 - Barrucand N° 259 - Hunter & Macalpine pp. 480/482- DSB IX pp. 325/328 (pour l'ouvrage de Mesmer) ---- Norman N° M77 (pour l'ouvrage de D'ESLON): "In his major treatise on magnetism, d'Eslon describes his first encounter with animal magnetism and how he became convinced of its efficacy. It also gives the details of eighteen cases treated by Mesmer under his observation, one of the patients being d'Eslon himself" - Crabtree N° 12**3663/ARM4
