He had a profound and salutary effect upon neurological thought". He succeeded Cruveilhier as chairman of the department of pathology at the Salpêtrière where he made extensive studies upon the action of various drugs on the nervous system and studied the principles of degeneration and regeneration in the nervous system. He was associated with Charcot at the Salpêtrière and Charcot credited Vulpian's work for his success in describing multiple sclerosis. Among other discoveries, Vulpian first showed that the adrenal cortex produces a substance later called adrenalin.
