---- PREMIERE EDITION FRANCAISE ---- "Neurological work progressed at a rapid pace in England during this period, with the findings of many men contributing to this advance. The first of these, H.C. Bastian, professor of pathological anatomy and physician at the University College Hospital, is primarly remembered for his work on aphasia. Not only was Bastian a clinician of note, but he also performed fundamental studies of spinal cord paralysis. He was the first to demonstrate that in total and complete section of the upper spinal cord, reflexes below the level of the lesion are lost. Bastian's foremost contribution to neurological thought was his Brain as the organ of the mind (1880)". (MacHenry p. 318) - Haymaker pp. 405/407 - DSB I pp. 495/498**265.G3
