Through the influence of Dupuytren, he was appointed professor of surgery at Montpellier in 1823. Only two years later he returned to Paris as professor of descriptive anatomy and in 1836 he accepted the newly created chair of pathological anatomy at Paris which he held for thirty years. In his day he was the leader and he was the first to give an adequate description of disseminated sclerosis and of progressive muscular atrophy.
