A very fine copy of the first Portugese edition of this famous essay on diseases of military camps. This was one of the most popular works on the subject of the 18th century. First published in German in 1758, it ran through numerous editions and translations. Van Swieten, a pupil of Boerhaave, transplanted the latter's method of teaching to Vienna and founded the Vienna School of Medicine. ".... did much to advance Austrian medicine and created the world-famed Vienna clinic after the Leiden pattern. As a perfect of the Imperial Library at Vienna, which he raised to the first rank, he had great influence upon the advancement of higher and medical education by his reorganization of the University.... As army surgeon, he wrote an important work upon hygiene of troops in camp" (Garrison). g&m 2152.
