A rare emsemble in first editions. "In France, Antoine Louis was the pioneer in applying medical knowledge to court-room practice. He wrote an important memoir of hanging, with reference to the differential signs of murder and suicide in cases of hanging (1763), and, in his discussion of the celebrated Villebranche case (1764), he ridiculed the possibility of extremely protracted pregnancy, and tried to set the time-limits of normal gestation, which, under the Code Napoleon, were finally fixed at three hundred days, as in the Roman laws of the Twelve Tables" (Garrison, p. 384). Garrison & Morton, 1731: "An attempt to set the minimum and maximum time limits of duration of human pregnancy. Louis was a pioneer of french medical jurisprudence". Good inner copies. With the bookplate of Dr. S. Garnier.
