"The greatest share in founding the Paris School (of clinical medicine)... fell to Broussais, a colourful Breton who had a wide influence... his "Histoire des Phlegmasies", which embodied much clinical material, and in which he set out his theory that many diseases are due to inflammation, especially of gastrointestinal tract... Broussais soon had a wide following in Paris" (Singer/Underwood 281ff). Broussais' ideas and person were subject to many polemics (i.a. Pinel) and ordinary quarrels, but his influence on the development of French medicine during the two decades following 1815 was very great. --(Scattered foxing and light browning).
