‎Edition originale rare donnant de nombreuses informations sur cet état, dont l'une des premières descriptions du ranch de bétail du Texas. En 1856-1857, Olmsted entreprit un voyage à cheval à travers le Texas pour visiter le pays et rendre compte de ses terres et de ses habitants. Basé sur des observations de première main et soutenu par des recherches statistiques, le récit d'Olmsted décrit les manières, la nourriture, les divertissements et les conversations des Texans, ainsi que leurs habitations, agriculture, affaires, animaux exotiques, conditions météorologiques changeantes et l'influence omniprésente de l'esclavage. Sa description du Lone Star State reste lun des meilleurs récits de lOuest américain jamais publiés. C.W. In 1856-1857, Olmsted set out on a horseback journey across Texas to visit the country and report on its lands and people. Based on first-hand observations and supported by statistical research, Olmsted's account describes Texans' manners, food, entertainment and conversation, as well as their dwellings, agriculture, business, exotic animals, changing weather conditions and the pervasive influence of slavery. His description of the Lone Star State remains one of the finest accounts of the American West ever published. C.W. Raines wrote: There is as yet no better book written about travel in Texas.
