Plein veau dépoque, plats et dos à nerfs muet estampés à froid avec motifs, encadrements et frises, Germaniae sur le premier plat, traces de lacets. (Trous de vers et manques de cuir).‎

‎Seconde édition de cet atlas sur lAllemagne dû à Gerhard Mercator (1512-1594), mathématicien, géographe et cartographe flamand, inventeur de la projection cartographique qui porte son nom. L'ouvrage est bien complet des 26 cartes de Mercator consacrées à l'Allemagne. Pionnier dans lhistoire de la cartographie, Mercator est considéré comme lun des fondateurs et lun des membres les plus éminents de lécole de cartographie flamande du XVIe siècle, avec Gemma Frisius et Abraham Ortelius. Réputé en son temps pour son activité de fabrication de globes et dinstruments scientifiques, il est aussi graveur de cartes et calligraphe. Auteur de nombreux écrits géographiques, philosophiques, théologiques, chronologiques, il est le premier à employer le terme « atlas » pour désigner un recueil de cartes. Bel exemplaire. 1 vol. in-folio (420 x 290 mm) with : [7] ff. (1 engraved title in period colors, table, index); 26 double-page maps in period colors. Provenance: DVN (cold-stamped on first cover); HST (tiny ink stamp on first blank leaf). (Significant wormholes, some affecting the text). Contemporary full calf, boards and spine with muted nerves, cold-stamped with motifs, frames and friezes, Germaniae on the first board, traces of laces (wormholes and missing leather). Second edition of this atlas of Germany by Gerard Mercator (1512-1594), Flemish mathematician, geographer and cartographer, inventor of the cartographic projection that bears his name. A pioneer in the history of cartography, he is considered one of the founders and most eminent members of the 16th-century Flemish school of cartography, along with Gemma Frisius and Abraham Ortelius. Renowned in his day for his globes and scientific instruments, he was also a map engraver and calligrapher. Author of numerous geographical, philosophical, theological and chronological writings, he was the first to use the term atlas to designate a collection of maps. The present atlas is complete with Mercator's 26 maps of Germany.‎
