Il a notamment apporté d'importantes contributions à l'étude de la perception des sons et des couleurs ainsi qu'à la thermodynamique. - Helmholtz a vécu à une époque propice à développer lexpérimentation grâce à un arsenal dinstruments de plus en plus performants, qui prolongent, démultiplient, amplifient, accélèrent le regard des scientifiques sur la nature des phénomènes (et dans ce cas précis, des phénomènes sonores) pour mettre en évidence les explications de certaines observations : la technique a permis de transcrire sous une forme objective des phénomènes inexpliqués ; ainsi, lacoustique progresse considérablement et Helmholtz fonde l'optique physiologique et la psychophysique.
