Reference : 44662
"19. Photo Album containing 203 original photographs, Vladivostok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Colombo, Suez Canal, Triest, August 24th 1920 - Oct. 14th 1920. Oblong album 19 cm x 29 cm, photo size 56 x 80 mm ; 76 x 108 mm ; 118 x 167 mm , all pictures mounted on dark brown album boards, numbered and with captions in German, written in white ink on dark brown boards, nicely preserved. Rare album with original photographs documenting the home voyage of the '' Ceskoslovenske legie - Czechoslovak Legion ''from Vladivostok, via Hong Kong, Singapore , Colombo, Port Said to Trieste in the autumn of 1920. The photographs were taken by a passenger who travelled on the S.S. President Grant. This ship figures prominently in the album. Loosely inserted is the last issue of the ship's newspaper '' Mohykan Lodni Casopis Transportu C. 35 '' Letzte Nr. Deutsche Ausgabe from 13. X. 1920, printed on board one day before the expected arrival in Trieste (a broadside 20 x 15 cm, giving details on the voyage). Rare documentation on the Czech Legion which played an important role in the First World War. The Legion emerged as an opposition army against the Austrian-Hungarian Empire at the start of WWI. They successfully fought in the Entente alongside the Russian troops against their homeland. When after the Russian Revolution a cease fire was negotiated between Russia and Germany they had no other option than leaving the Ukranian battle fields via Vladivostok (Siberia) as all European roads and ports were closed to them. In May 1918 they got involved in the fighting between the Red Army and White Army. At one time the Czechoslovak Legion controlled the entire length of the Trans-Siberian Railway."
