Au cours de trois voyages, en 1868, 1887 et 1889, Freshfield, l'un des plus célèbres représentants de l'alpinisme britannique, traversa la chaîne principale du Caucase onze fois par huit passages différents. Il a participé à l'ascension de trois des grands sommets, Elbruz, Kasbek et Tetnuld. Il donne aussi le récit des ascensions d'autres pics par plusieurs de ses amis du Club alpin : H. Wooley, J.G. Douglas William Freshfield (18451934) British lawyer, mountaineer and writer who edited the Alpine Journal from 1872 to 1880 He was an active member of the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club and served as president of both organizations. He also served as the first president of the Geographical Association from 18971911. His presidency was the longest in the history of the Association.
