" Paris, Jubin, Beaulé, Dondey-Dupré, 1829 - 1832 , 16 volumes of each ca. 400 pp bound in 8 vols. Bound in uniform contemporary light brown half leather, raised backs with gilt decoration and two labels, a very handsome set notwithstanding some very sparse foxing and some really minimal wear at a few volumes. Complete new French translation of the ''History of England'' by David Hume and the continuation by Oliver Goldsmith and William Jones. The first part, The History of the House of Stuart, was written by Hume and published in 1754 and 1756; it was translated into French by l'abbé Prévot in 1760. The House of Tudor, first published in English in 1759, was translated by Madame Belot ( Octavie Guichard ) in 1763. She also published the Plantagenet part in 1765. For the period from 1688 until 1760 the continuation by Oliver Goldsmith is used. From 1760 until the crowning ot George IV Langlois translated the publication by William Jones, which appeared in 1825 and was announced as the continuation of Hume and Smollett. The French translator Alexandre Langlois (1788 -1854), a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles lettres, was also famous for publishing translations from the Sanscrit language."
