Paris, Briasson, 1727 - 1740. 8vo. Uniformly bound in 41 nice contemporary Cambridge-style mirror bindings with five raised bands and richly gilt spines. Boards with scratches, occassionally with loss of leather. Internally nice and clean. Vols. 1-37 (vol. 10 in two bindings), 39-41.
First edition of this large and extensive bio-bibliography of European authors from the Renaissance to the 18th century. The earliest author is John Dee (d. 1607) and the latest being Guillaume Delisle (d. 1720). Jean-Pierre Nicéron was “A French lexicographer, born in Paris, 11 March, 1685, died there, 8 July, 1738. After his studies at the Collège Mazarin, he joined the Barnabites (August, 1702). He taught rhetoric in the college of Loches, and soon after at Montargis, where he remained ten years. While engaged in teaching, he made a thorough study of modern languages. In 1716 he went to Paris and devoted his time to literary work. His aim was to put together, in a logically arranged compendium, a series of biographical and bibliographical articles on the men who had distinguished themselves in literature and sciences since the time of the Renaissance. It required long research as well as great industry. After eleven years he published the first volume of his monumental work under the title of ""Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des hommes illustres de la république des lettres avec le catalogue raisonné de leurs ouvrages"" (Paris, 1727). Thirty-eight volumes followed from 1728 to 1738. The last volume from his pen was published two years after the author's death (Paris, 1740).”(Catholic Encyclopedi) “It has been often repeated that this work lacks method, ana that the length of many articles is out of proportion to the value of the men to whom they are devoted. This criticism, however true it may be, does not impair the genuine qualities and importance of the whole work. Even now, these ""Mémoires"" contain a great amount of information that could hardly be obtained elsewhere. Moreover, they refer to sources which, but for our author, would be easily overlooked or ignored.” (Ibid) A German translation was published in 1747-1777 Brunet IV, 55.

It is the first critical and completely illustrated ""Verzeichnis"" for a German museum. All plates are engraved under the direction of Chr. de Mechel of Basel.""Le premier volume de cet ouvrege contient les planches représentant 365 sujets gravés avec beaucoup de délicatesse."" Piet Mondriaan catalogue raisonne of the naturalistic works (until early 1911) ; Catalogue raisonne of the work of 1911-1944 . Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944) is clearly best known for his abstract paintings with red yellow and blue expanses of colour. Yet in the course of his fascinating life the artist explored many style trends which eventually around 1920 led him to the pure abstraction of Neo-Plasticism. This catalogue of his work is unique in that for the first time it offers a review of the whole of Mondrian's oeuvre from his first figurative paintings right up to his abstract neo-plastic work. This Catalogue raisonn includes a chronological list of exhibitions and an extensive comprehensively illustrated chronology of Mondriaan's life and career. The information on exhibitions literature and provenance has been assembled from a wide study of the original documentary sources supplemented by information acquired from numerous interviews with Mondriaan's contemporaries. The catalogue notes (in English) are chronological; as well as the usual technical data there is a detailed discussion of each work and a black-and-white illustration. The book also contains a register of his work with cross-references to the Seuphor-Ottolenghi catalogue and an index. With financial assistance from the Grant Program of the J. Paul Getty Trust many of the paintings have been re-photographed in colour especially for this book so that full justice can be done to Mondrian's works.

Six volumes, up to volume VI. Cy Twombly Catalogue Raisonn of the Paintings Volume VI covers the final years of the artist?s life, from 2008 to 2011. Bastian?s introductory essay reflects more broadly on motifs and recurrent concerns throughout the artist?s practice rather than focusing heavily on individual artworks or cycles, as previous introductory essays do. Bastian meditates in particular on the sea and its many appearances and instantiations in Twombly?s oeuvre; he returns, as he does consistently throughout his catalogue raisonn introductions, to the work of St phane Mallarm , reflecting on what Twombly called the ?white, white, white? of the Mediterranean. Bastian offers extended reflections on Twombly?s late monumental sequence The Rose (2008) and Camino Real (2011), a series which shares the vibrant hues and Bacchic form of his final paintings. The volume includes more of Twombly?s Bacchus paintings, as well as his formally similar untitled blue iterations, completed in Lexington; scholars focused on the Bacchus series will need to consult volumes IV and V as well, as the longer diachronic span of the series results in appearance in multiple volumes. The Rose is accompanied by Blooming (2001?2008), and use of poetry such as that of Rainer Maria Rilke is prevalent throughout. Twombly?s Leaving Paphos Ringed With Waves works (2008) are also included here. Relevant literature relating to these final works includes Cy Twombly: Homes and Studios, ed. Nicola del Roscio (2020), which will be of interest for its documentation of Twombly?s working practice; many of the photographs reproduced document the production of these late paintings. For Leaving Paphos Ringed with Waves, see Cy Twombly: Making Past Present, ed. Chistine Kondoleon and Kate Nesin (2020) and the eponymous Gagosian catalogue (2009), with essays by Demosthenes Davvetas and Mary Jacobus. For the Bacchus series (present in cat. rais. volumes V, VI, and VII), see the eponymous Gagosian catalogue (2005), Gary Astrachan?s Naming the Gods: Cy Twombly's Passionate Poiesis (2020), and Dominique Baqu ?s Cy Twombly: Sous le signe d?Apollon et de Dionysos (2016). For The Rose, see the eponymous Gagosian catalogue (2009), Mary Jacobus?s Reading Cy Twombly: Poetry in Paint (2016), and Baqu ?s Sous le signe. Thierry Greub?s Inscriptions (2022) and (ed.) Cy Twombly: Image, Text, Paratext (2017) are also useful for tracking literary references.
