‎PORTRAIT DE CHARLES DARWIN - CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPH OF CHARLES DARWIN‎

Baker Street / Portman Square / London", [1870 ou1874], , , portrait format "cabinet" : tirage albuminé [60 x 90 mm] contrecollé sur carton [105 x 64 mm], Belle et rare épreuve dans ce format réalisée par le studio Elliot & Fry, fondé en 1863 (actif jusqu'en 1962) par Joseph John Elliot (1835-1903) et Clarence Edmund Fry (1840-1897) avec la mention imprimée de leur première adresse au 55 Baker Street (jusqu'en 1919). Signature fac-similé "C. Darwin" imprimée au bas du portrait sur le carton qui porte également le copyright imprimé du studio, au verso de la carte est imprimé le blason du studio, son nom et son adresse ainsi qu'un timbre à sec. Portrait daté de 1874 par la National Portrait Gallery de Londres qui possède un exemplaire similaire conservé sous le n° d'inventaire NPG x5934, avec un format moindre (83 x 50 mm) car une partie du tirage est masquée par un encadrement. Dès 1869, Charles Darwin semble disposer de ces portraits carte de visite et les évoque dans sa correspondance : "I like best the profile of Ernest Edwards, or a 3/4 face vignette which Messrs Elliot & Fry (Baker St) & which is a strong likeness & pleasing are now making some copies of for us,but I cannot send you one, or one of Mr Edwards'." [En ligne]) ; Le 2 août 1871 il adresse ses remerciements pour les photographies à Elliot & Fry : "Many thanks for the Photographs which are very good" (Darwin Correspondence Project, ?Letter no. 7893A,?
