Société Française des Amis des Arts ( éditeur ) - [ ] Paris Salon 1898 :
Reference : 51950
"4. Paris, Société Française des Amis des Arts, typographie Chamerot et Renouard. 1898. In-folio, 47 x 33 cm, 20 nn pp + 9 full page plates each with a serpent with printed caption. 8 plates are photogravures, 1 plate is an original lithograph by Mauro of a work by Ernest Hébert. The plates are kept in a separate in-folio quire with printed half-title and index. Loose as issued, kept in an original cloth portfolio, together with 3 other years. The first page ( half-title, severaly browned ; the last page soiled. Very rare annual report of the ''Société Française des Amis des Arts'' The society was founded in 1885. Its main aim was to promote French art and especially the official French ( Parisian) fine arts Salon. Each year they organised a lottery among their members ( in 1898 they numbered ca. 650). The Society acquired at the 1898 Salon 72 works of art which were put up for a raffle among their members. This publication gives a complete list of its members and a detailed report of the result of the lotery. In view of the rarety of this publication* and the luxurious execution of the publication we have reason to believe that it was published in a restricted number, only destined for the members. ( some of the original portfolio's are numbered -highest nr. we found is 351).Among the patrons we find C. Bouguereau , Raymond Poincaré , Baron de Rothschild, Victorien Sardou, Ed. Détaillé. As we found the name of Eduard Detaille (1848 - 1912) on the cover of another issue ( year 1902) we presume that this must also have been his copy. He was a French painter famous for his battle scenes. (* the French National Library has only similar reports for the year 1885 -> 1895 ), it lacks all later publications). The year 1895, 1896, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1903 are nowhere to be found ( Worldcat July 2019). If you order all the available 8 years ( 1888, 1898, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1907, 1909 and 1910) the total price would be 3000 Euro."
