‎Peter Paul Rubens and His Landscapes: Ideas on Nature and Art ‎

‎be-, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2014 Hardback, 300 pages., 38 b/w ill. 12 colour ill., 190 x 250 mm, Languages: English fine! . ISBN 9782503550381.‎

‎Painting landscapes was very much a private activity for Peter Paul Rubens. Whilst the majority of his other works were commissioned, the landscapes seem to have been painted for his own pleasure and delight and stayed in the artist?s possession until his death. Most of them were painted in the last decade of his life; a happy period, in which Rubens retired from public duties and spent most of his free time studying the antique and enjoying sojourns on his country estate, castle Het Steen. To grasp this profoundly personal character of Rubens?s landscapes, this book considers the artist?s highly complex method of pictorial invention to illuminate the perception, implementation, dissemination, and posthumous reception of views on nature and landscape as depicted in Rubens?s landscape art. By investigating contemporary notions on the changing perception of nature and landscape in late 16th and early 17th-century southern Netherlandish culture, Rubens?s position within this socio-cultural matrix will be established, thus shedding new light on the artist?s own perception of nature and landscape. The re-assessment of the influence of classical and contemporary ideas about nature and landscape, as well as Rubens?s personal sense of place, will illuminate important characteristics which further define Rubens?s ideas about nature implemented in his landscape art. Also, fresh light will be cast on the sudden promulgation and dissemination of Rubens?s apparently private views on nature and landscape through a novel examination of the print series of the Small and Large Landscapes, reproducing the artist?s landscapes. The final theme in this illuminating book considers the posthumous reception of Rubens?s ?painted ideas of landscape?. The book also contains an updated version of the catalogue raisonne of Rubens?s landscape art, supplemented by a record of the Small and Large Landscapes prints series‎

‎GALLEN-KALLELA Mythes et Nature‎

‎, mercaterfonds - fondsmercator, 2022 HB, 280 x 240 mm, 192 p, 101 illustrations, FR edition. ISBN 9789462302877.‎

‎Ecocriticism and Old Norse Studies. Nature and the Environment in Old Norse Literature and Culture‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 312 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503604848.‎

‎Summary Ecocriticism and Old Norse Studies is the first anthology to combine environmental humanities approaches and the study of premodern Nordic literature and culture. The chapters gathered here present innovative research based on the most recent developments within ecologically informed literary and cultural studies. Covering a wide variety of sources, the volume provides new insights into the Old Norse environmental imagination, showing how premodern texts relate to nature and the environment ? both the real-world environments of the Viking Age and Middle Ages, and the fantastic environments of some parts of saga literature. Collectively, the contributions shed new light on the role of cultural contacts, textual traditions, and intertextuality in the shaping of Old Norse perceptions and representations of nature and the environment, as well as on the modern reception and (mis-)use of these ideas. The volume moreover has a contemporary relevance, inviting readers to consider the lessons that can be learned from how people perceived their environments and interacted with them in the past as we face environmental crises in our own times. ‎JAMES ENSOR ET LA NATURE MORTE EN BELGIQUE (1830-1930) : Rose, Rose, Rose Mes yeux ‎

‎, Mercatorfonds, 2023 PB, 260 x 210 mm, Edition Fr., 176 p, 160 illustrations en couleur, Nouveau, . ISBN 9789462303614.‎

‎To See into the Life of Things: The Contemplation of Nature in Maximus the Confessor and his Predecessors,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Paperback, 400 p., 15 x 21. ISBN 9782503548937.‎

‎This work provides a synthetic treatment of Maximus the Confessor's Ambigua to John, a collection of texts uniquely expressive of the speculative contours of his thought. Maximus the Confessor (580-662) is one of the great minds of the Christian tradition and his Ambigua to John are a collection of texts uniquely expressive of the speculative contours of his thought. They have not, however, received a synthetic treatment until now. This work provides such a synthetic treatment and argues that Maximus' central concern in the Ambigua to John is to articulate the nature of philosophy and, more precisely, the scope of the contemplation of nature within the philosophical life, where "philosophy," the love of wisdom, is nothing less than the love of the Divine. Part I of this study provides a thorough background in Greek philosophical and patristic philosophies of nature, showing how Maximus' predecessors understood knowledge of the world in relation to philosophical life, discourse, and praxis. Part II studies the contemplation of nature in the Ambigua and analyzes Maximus' account of human affectivity in the world, his account of the coherence of philosophical life (praxis and contemplation) as a response to this affectivity, his understanding of the relation between God and the world, and his reconciliation of these various aspects of philosophy in the Christian economy of salvation, which he understands as the renewal of nature and its contemplation.
