‎Après avoir terminé Ulysse, Joyce pensait qu’il avait achevé l’œuvre de sa vie. Mais, le 10 mars 1923, il commença un texte qu’il nomma d’abord Work in progress, œuvre plus ambitieuse encore dont il achève les deux premières parties en 1926. Elle seront publiées par Eugène et Maria Jolas, en feuilleton dans leur magazine Transition. C’est chez eux que, dix-sept ans après le début de sa rédaction, Joyce annoncera le titre final de son livre, qui comprend in fine dix-sept chapitres : Finnegans Wake sera publié en volume le 4 mai 1939. Réputé difficile, illisible et intraduisible, Finnegans Wake est néanmoins considéré comme un monument de la littérature du XXe siècle. Ce livre est dit « traduit de l’anglais », mais mêle en réalité plusieurs langues, à un tel point que certains spécialistes prétendent qu’il n’y a pas de langue de départ. La première traduction, incomplète et imparfaite, paraît en 1962 ; il faudra attendre celle de Philippe Lavergne en 1982 pour en avoir la première traduction intégrale. Bel exemplaire broché. ‎
