The complete set comprises 5 series ; [I] June 1949 - June 1950 , issues 1-11. [II] Oct.1950-Oct.1951 , issues 1-8. [III] Déc.1951-Oct.1952. [IV] Jan. 1953-Déc.1953 , issues1-8 . [V] Febr.1954 - Déc. 1954 , issues 1-8. The complete set comprises 36 physical issues ; there being 7 double issues. The 18 loose plates consists of stencil coloured plates, lithographs, sériegraphs and one etching * ; works by Jean Dewasme , Magnelli , Vasarely, Léger , Jacques Villon, Ben Nicholson, Juan Gris, Deyrolle, Carlsund , Magnelli, Hartung, Baumeister, Sophie Tauber, André Bloc, Herbin and Jonny Friedlander*. The first loosely inserted plate occurs in issue 9 of the first series. (April 1950, issue devoted to the art of engraving). Only 300 numbered issues received a plate which could be, at random, by Boumeester , Bertholle , Chastel, Friedlander, Flocon....( 22 different artists). Complete set in fine condition of this important French avant-garde art periodical which pioneered '' Abstract Art ''. Among the contributors for the articles on the abstract art scene in Europe we find Michel Seuphor, Edgard Pillet , Léon Degand , Pierre Guéguen, Gerd Schiff , Julien Alvard , Daniel Henry Kahnweiler , R.V. Issues 1-37 were published and printed in Paris (printer Alcan-Lévy in the rue Chauchat). From issue 38 onwards printing and publishing was transferred to Buenos Aires (printer Jacob Peuser). AVAILABLE: Volume I : 1st & 2nd year ( 1889 - 1891) Issues 1 (Sept. 1889) -> Issue 19 (July 1891 ). 196 pp ; 128 pp. (the issues 20-24 of the second year are missing). Bound in a contemporary brown half leather binding, title page for the year and index bound in. Binding with some stains and soiling. With a small hole (loss of leather) at the top of the spine. Still an acceptable copy with a stainless interior. Volume 2 . 3rd year (1892). Issues 25-36, 214 pp. Bound in publisher's red cloth, with blind decoration on front cover and large gilt title on spine and front cover. Good binding, with minimal traces of use. Volume 3. 4th year (1893). Issues 37-48, 240 pp. Bound in publisher's red cloth, with blind decoration on front cover and large gilt title on spine and front cover. (uniform to vol.2) Good binding, with minimal traces of use. With a small marginal waterstain at the upper margin of the first leaves, still a good copy.. Interesting illustrated monthly general intrest periodical which is testimony of the close relation which existed between France and Argentina. As a matter of fact French immigration into Argentina was at its highest in the years covered by this periodical. The French were the 3rd largest group of immigrants, after the Italians and the Spaniards. French culture (especially architecture) had a great influence on the city of Buenos Aires; named by many the Paris of South-America. The periodical is very rare. There are only 3 entries in the OCLC catalogue. The BN in Paris , with the largest run of this item, lacks all issues after nr. 36.."‎

Printed on vergé paper ( on art paper for the 12 issues of Les Lèvres Nues ). Complete collection which includes , as it should be, the 12 issues of ''Les Lèvres nues''. There exist only 50 complete sets of this periodical as the first issues were only printed in that number, gradually climbing to a maximum of 250 copies. The last issue was printed in 145 copies. This is set number ''trente-huit'' (38), each issue numbered in lettering in red ink , in the hand of the editor Marcel Mariën. Issue 62-64 contains an additional dedication in his hand to the subscriber. This is a rare complete set in loose issues. Apart from some very slight dustsoiling at some issues and a uniform light browning of issues 11, 12 and 23 ( due to a different paper quality) this set is in very fine condition. Kept in 2 purposely made cloth boxes. Boxes in uniform red cloth, leather title label on back. Complete set of the foremost belgian surrealist periodical to appear after the Second World War. It contains important contributions by René Magritte which are often illustrated by the painter. E.g. Issue 3 ''Visions de gloire '', issue 34-35 Paul Nougé '' Pour illustrer Magritte''.
