‎Antichit Diverse Album. The Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2016 Hardcover with dusjacket, VIII+536 p., 261 colour ill., 210 x 275 mm,. ISBN 9781905375752.‎

‎Cassiano's Antichita Diverse album, here published for the first time in its entirety, is essentially the Paper Museum in embryo. The modest title ('Various Antiquities') hardly does justice to the range of material represented, for almost every category of portable antiquity to be found in the cabinets of Rome is illustrated: gems, coins, gaming pieces, vessels and tableware of all kinds, oil lamps, weights and measures, keys, weapons, military equipment, rings, musical instruments, burial urns, altars and tripods, figurines, statues and reliefs, in every possible material from terracotta and bone to tin, lead, bronze, silver, gold, marble and semi-precious stones. The 500 or so studies, on 108 sheets, date mainly from the early 1620s, and were produced probably with the (unrealised) intention that they would be reproduced as a series of prints to serve the antiquarian interests of the pan-European 'Republic of Letters'. Elena Vaiani is a research fellow in the history of archaeology at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa. Her research interests are concerned with the relationships between the history of art, collections, antiquarian studies and the visual arts in the early modern period, with particular reference to small objects (such as coins, gems and domestic utensils). Amanda Claridge was formerly Professor of Roman Archaeology at Royal Holloway, University of London, specialising in Roman art, topography and architecture, and with a particular interest in antiquarian studies of the early modern period. Cassiano dal Pozzo?s extraordinary endeavour to encapsulate the knowledge of his time is intriguing on many levels. The publication of the Antichit Diverse album is a crowning achievement, but it is by no means the last word." (Gillian Darley, in: Apollo, September 2017) ?One can only hope that the book under review will become a model for the volumes still to be published in the same series..? ‎Album d'Auschwitz - D'apr s un album d couvert par Lili Meier, survivante du camp de concentration‎

‎, Seuil , 1983 Hardcover, 221 pages, Texte en Francais, 280 x 220 x 18 mm, tres bon etat, nombreuses photos en n/b. mouvant ISBN 9782020066266.‎

‎THE AUSCHWITZ ALBUM was found by a young Jewish girl (Lili Jacob Meier) during the final days of the Third Reich, when she was awaiting liberation. The album is the only surviving visual evidence of the entire process of extermination as perpetrated by the Nazis against the Jews, except for the actual murder itself. The photos are presumed to have been taken by Ernst Hofmann or by Bernhard Walter, two SS men, although there is no conclusive evidence of this. The time frame of the photos is May or June 1944, which saw the liquidation of a massive number of Hungarian Jews. Lili herself was the sole surviving member of her family, who had been deported from the Carpathians, from a small community living in Bielke. The photographs, all in black and white, are accompanied by text written by Peter Hellmann, and the images are haunting: men and women, entire families, waiting on the ramps after their exhausting journey by cattle cars to Auschwitz-Birkenau; wondering looks; doubt, uncertainty, hope clouding their faces, as they wonder about their fate; old people, young children, the infirm, all waiting to be selected for what we now know would be certain death. These images are not only poignant but horrifying because the threat to these innocents is implied in the photographs, with the crematoria looming in the background, with the implacable SS presence on the ramps and all over. I will not soon forget these images.‎

‎In Search of the Lost Record : British Album Cover Art of 50's to 80's Eng/Jap‎

‎, Graphic-Sha Publishing 2002, 2002 Softcover, 160 pages, ENG / JAP, 300 x 215 mm, book in New state, literally hundreds of album covers that are hard to find, . ISBN 9784766112689.‎

‎* An extraordinary collection of the best (and worst) album cover art from the glorious heyday of the vinyl LP, the halcyon era of British Popular Music, from the 'Beat Boom' of the early 60's through to the excesses of' Progressive Rock', 'Heavy Rock', 'Glam Rock' and beyond * A beautifully- designed treasure trove of imagery that will appeal to vinyl junkies, nostalgic obsessives and to anybody interested in the evolution of British design over the past forty years and features over 800 full colour reproductions of album sleeves * Contains the work of such notable (and notorious) artists and designers of the period as Hipgnosis, Roger Dean, Gered Mankowitz, Mick Rock and Klaus Voormann who designed for the Beatles * Records produced in the UK in the late 60's and early 70's have a unique appeal for collectors, mainly because of the care and attention paid to design and to production, qualities rarely found in the products of other countries in those days With its large 12 X 12 surface the LP record sleeve provided a unique canvas with which to ignite the artist's imagination. In Search of the Lost Record is an incredible collection of art that belongs to a genre that is undoubtedly heading for extinction, and documents the evolution of a hugely influential art form - from the simplicity of the early 60's to the extravagance, artistic self-indulgence and gatefold sleeve excesses that were a by-product of the heady era of progressive rock. Many of these featured designs have become valuable collector's items. The book is divided into short thematic segments such as psychedelia, exoticism, the nude, lettering, illustration, fantasy and nonsense and humour. One section of the book is devoted to record labels like Harvest, RCA, Island, Chrysalis, Vertigo, Charisma, Virgin, and their logos which carry such huge cultural resonance and significance. The featured recording artists range from the legendary and iconic figures of the golden age of British popular music- Beatles, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Roxy Music, the Who, the Rolling Stones etc - to their utterly obscure and unheralded contemporaries.‎
