‎Brueghel: the family reunion.‎

‎, WBooks, 2023 hardcover, 192 pages, Illustrated. ISBN 9789462585720.‎

‎The Brueghels are the most famous family in the history of Western art. They were innovators and entrepreneurs who were active from around 1550 to 1700. Their roots in Brabant played a major role in their art, which focuses on the people, land, and culture of this region. For almost two centuries, the Brueghels produced hundreds of paintings, drawings, and prints that captivate and entertain viewers. These works are admired for their witty compositions, universal messages, and exceptional craftsmanship. From depictions of familiar proverbs to insect studies, and from credit card size paintings on copper to monumental canvases, the variety is endless. This reunion of all five generations looks anew at the Brueghels and the context in which they worked. Who were the members of this successful family and what connects their diverse careers? How did their fascination with the local landscape lead to new ways of representing nature in art? What do their artworks reveal about the consequences of global trade and European colonization? For the first time, attention is given to the crucial role of women in the family business. Brueghel: The Family Reunion is a catalogue that is as visually rich as the artworks themselves, and it unravels the secret of a centuries-long successful family of artists. ‎

‎TERRY Astley Herbert (Weybridge 1866 - Buckinghamshire 1945) :‎

Reference : 51621

‎Biographical Records of the Heads of the Family and those other Members through whom the Headship descends. Compiled in the first instance by Astley Herbert Terry.‎

‎"14. London, november 1923, manuscript on paper (first 5 leaves on vellum) , format in-4°, 26 x 23 cm, (14) nn pp + ca. 250 pp ( the pages are numbered 1-82 and are e written, the pages which follow are unnumbered and blank). Page 6 is a full page coloured coat of arms ( on vellum). Bound in full red velvet. With a central clasps and 8 corner protections ; all executed in filigree silver work (filigrane). With the engraved ex-libris of Astley Terry on the first paste down, and a second engraved ex-libris from John Holden. The author sets out to describe the family history. In the introduction he complains about the lack of data about his forebears. Of his family members living in the 19th c. he is able to give us many interesting descriptions. The last entry is about his son also named Astley, born in 1896. The description contains long episodes of the Flemish battle fields ( Wytschate, Kemmelberg, Ypres, Menin ridge..ca. 10 pp .) Both father and son had military careers. The author expresses the wish that future family members might continue his work. This was obviously not done. One of the reasons might be that most of the children in the family were allways girls. Remarkable autobiographical document in a well preserved binding with nice and curious silver filigree ornamentations and a large clasp."‎
