[4]-365-1 bl. pages (complet). Frottements importants, petit accident en coiffe, intérieur piqué. État correct. Édition faisant partie de la Collection of ancient and modern british authors (n°166), publiée par Baudry et ayant proposé 450 ouvrages entre 1839 et 1850. Originellement publiée à Londres la même année que celle-ci, l’édition originale s’est vue complétée de trois autres volumes jusqu’en 1849. George Payne Rainsford James (1799-1860) est un auteur de romans historiques anglais. Consul britannique aux États-Unis, il devient historiographe royale de Grande-Bretagne. Il a écrit notamment sur Richelieu, Philippe Auguste, Henri de Guise, Azincourt. Bon exemplaire.

1 volume in-8 (16,5 x 10,5 cm), maroquin rouge (reliure de l’époque, signée Dodé), dos à nerfs avec titre doré, double filet doré sur les coupes, dentelle dorée sur les chasses, tranches dorées, inscription manuscrite : “Unpublished and most private”, notes en marges imprimées en rouge, [8]-330 pages. Feuillets D7, F4, H4, I7, L4, N1, O3, P5, Q6, R5, S5, U4 manquants (corrections possibles de l’auteur), légers frottements aux mors et coiffes. État très correct tout de même. ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE de l’auteur à “Madame La Comtesse de Greffulhe, a confidential gift from Phantasos”. De son nom de naissance Marie-Joséphine-Anatole-Louise-Élisabeth de Riquet, comtesse de Caraman-Chimay (1860-1952), dont il tomba amoureux, est une aristocrate parisienne de la Belle Époque, l'un des modèles d'inspiration de Marcel Proust pour le personnage de la duchesse de Guermantes dans À la recherche du temps perdu. EXEMPLAIRE D’ÉPREUVES, comprenant quelques corrections auctoriales à l’encre noire. Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton (1831-1891) est un diplomate, un homme d'État et un poète britannique. Ce poème, conçu en 1872 et mis en vers pour la première fois en 1874, n'a jamais été entièrement abandonné par son auteur, qui l'a presque entièrement réécrit au cours des dernières années de sa vie, et en particulier lors de son ambassade parisienne durant l'été 1887, qu’il passe à proximité de la comtesse de Greffulhe. L’œuvre sera finalement publiée sous un nom d’emprunt, Owen Meridith. UNIQUE EXEMPLAIRE.

Beautiful photographic album, from the library of Ernesta Stern (1854-1926), writer famous for her salon in Faubourg Saint-Honoré where she notably welcomed Marinetti or Marcel Proust. Born Maria Ernesta Hierschel de Minerbi, she married the banker Louis Stern.
