Como parte de los esfuerzos que se han realizado para conocer quiénes exploraron la Antigua California, el autor de esta obra ofrece, junto con la rica cartografía derivada de la empresa exploradora, testimonios de los relatos, de los diarios, de las rutas, de los informes y de las crónicas producidas por capitanes, pilotos, religiosos, corsarios y otras gentes que por innumerables y diversos intereses se internaron en ese territorio. Incluye una valoración de algunas obras elaboradas por investigadores de prestigio académico acerca de este tema. Es éste un trabajo concebido como “una introducción razonada a las principales fuentes escritas y cartográficas acerca de las exploraciones en torno y en el interior de la Antigua California”. En cuanto al ámbito temporal en el que se circunscribe esta obra es, básicamente, el periodo que va del siglo XVI al XVIII, sin olvidar por ello alguna información derivada de la llamada “cartografía precalifórnica”, en la cual se sitúa Cipango (Japón) en el sitio que corresponde a California. As part of the efforts that have been carried out to know who explored Old California, the author of this work offers, together with rich cartography derived from the enterprise of the explorers, the testimonies of the narratives, diaries, routes, reports and chronicles produced by captains, guides, the clergy, pirates, and other people who for innumerable and diverse interests entered into this territory. It includes an appraisal of some works produced by prestigious academic researchers on the issue. This is the work conceived of as “a reasoned introduction to the main written and cartographic sources concerning the explorations around the area and in the interior of Old California”. Regarding the temporary ambit in which it is circumscribed, this work basically encompasses the period ranging from the 16th to the 18th Century, in addition to certain information derived from so-called “pre-Californian cartography”, in which Cipango (Japan, also known as Nippon) is the site that corresponded to California.
