‎A Stastical Theory of Stellar Encounters. - [STATISTICAL THEORY OF STELLAR ENCOUNTERS]‎

‎USA, [No printer], 1941. Lex8vo. In the original printed wrappers. ""Reprinted for private circulation from The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 94, No. 3, November 1941"". Previous owner's name, the famous English physicist, astronomer and mathematician, [J. H. Jeans] to top right corner of front wrapper. Very light miscolouring to lower left corner of front wrapper, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. Pp. 511-524.‎

‎Scarce offprint issue, from the library of the influential English physicist and astronomer James Hopwood Jeans, of Chandrasekhar's important paper in which he developed his statistical theory of stellar encounters. In the 1983 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physic for key discoveries that led to the currently accepted theory on the later evolutionary stages of massive stars.Chandresekhar is famous for showing that the final fate of a star depends on its mass, furthermore he calculated that massive stars would be unable to evolve into white dwarfs, the limiting size called the Chandresekhar Limit.""An important question from the point of view of what can be observed is how the cumulative effect of chance encounters affects the orbit of a star measured by what is called ""time of relaxation"" of the stellar system. Conventional wisdom assumed it could be theoretically calculated by considering the cumulative effect of a large number of two-body encounters. A closer analysis convinced Chandrasekhar that such an idealization did not provide a good approximation to the physical situation in the stellar system. The gravitational field fluctuated in space and time. New methods of treating the problem based on statistics were required. He laid the foundations of such new methods in one of his most celebrated and widely quoted papers, ""Stochastic and Statistical Problems in Astronomy,"" published in 1943. The probability methods reviewed in this paper have found application beyond astronomy in a wide variety of problems and fields as different as colloidal chemistry and stellar dynamics."" (DSB) James Hopwood Jeans (1877 -1946) made several important contributions in many areas of physics, including quantum theory, the theory of radiation and stellar evolution. His analysis of rotating bodies led him to conclude that Laplace's theory that the solar system formed from a single cloud of gas was incorrect, proposing instead that the planets condensed from material drawn out of the sun by a hypothetical catastrophic near-collision with a passing star. This theory is not accepted today. Furthermore he is the founder of British cosmology. ‎

‎PRESENT Stephan Vanfleteren, A journey through the oeuvre of photographer Stephan Vanfleteren, with expansive personal reflections and stories from three decades of encounters and photography.‎

‎BE - , Hannibal / Kannibaal , 2019 Hardcover with screen printing, Bichromy and quadrichromy, 31 x 24,3 cm, 496 pages, English edition; First Edition ! ISBN 9789492677151.‎

‎A journey through the oeuvre of photographer Stephan Vanfleteren, with expansive personal reflections and stories from three decades of encounters and photography ?At times I think that Stephan has a clear idea of how to make his photographs work so well. But then there?s this book here, showing us he is constantly, across a wide range of situations, searching for his visual language, for his self, for stories that need to be told, and then the work becomes so exciting again for me, and important and rich, that I want to drown myself in it. A masterful collection.? ? Anton Corbijn, photographerand director ?I am more than a passenger of the past. People sometimes ask me if I look back too much. Of course, I look back, but I also look forward, to the left, to the right, up and down. Far and near. And for the first time I?m also really looking inside.? ? Stephan Vanfleteren Stephan Vanfleteren (1969) is mainly known to the general public for his penetrating black & white portrait photography, but over the past decades his work has ranged to documentary, artistic and personal pictures. From street photography in world cities like New York to the genocide of Ruanda, from storefront façades to the mystical landscapes of the Atlantic wall, from still lifes to intense portraits. The iconic images sit side by side with unknown treasures in this heavy tome containing no less than 505 photographs. In the very personal accompanying text, Vanfleteren reflects on how his own work and the photography genre as a whole have evolved in recent decades. You get a close-up look at his intriguing career from the very beginning, when he travelled the world with an appetite for action. He also photographed his home country: all of the headline news stories of the 1990s appeared before his lens. Around the Millennium, Vanfleteren started to focus on that which is disappearing. With painstaking attention to nuance he created a visual archive of his homeland and of his fellow Belgians, in his own inimitable style. In the last few years Vanfleteren has brought the world inside, to his daylight studio, resulting in many encounters and portraits. This book includes two new series ? not previously published ? which were born in the intimacy of his studio: an exploration of the still life and a study of nude photography, both in colour. Stephan Vanfleteren turns fifty this year and he is celebrating with a major retrospective exhibition filling the entire building at Fotomuseum Antwerpen (FOMU, from 25 October 2019 to 1 March 2020) and with this publication. ?I was there, I was present?, says the photographer, who always feels as much a witness as an accomplice. Present is an impressive overview of Vanfleteren?s oeuvre that provides a complete picture of him as a photographer, an artist, and above all a human being who faces life with empathy, wonder, and curiosity. ‎

‎JACQUES SONCK : Encounters‎

‎, FIFTY ONE, 2014 Softcover, 86 pag. NL / ENG / FR. edition, 210 x 150 mm, New, with b/w pictures. ISBN 9789081772525.‎

‎The exhibition catalogue of Jacques Sonck's show at the Fort Napoleon in Belgian beach town Ostend, during the summer of 2014. Gallery FIFTY ONE was invited to curate this exhibition. The result speaks for itself: under the name ?Encounters? the reader comes face to face with more than 50 black-and-white portraits, made by the Belgian photographer Jacques Sonck (1949). 'Encounters' refers to sudden and ephemeral meetings, which are distinctive for the work of Jacques Sonck since 1975. His images can be best described as penetrating street or studio portraits of eccentric individuals from all walks of life, made in his home country. It is the unusual, the abnormal that is being captured by Soncks eye without any ridicule. Often it are characters who stand out for their odd behavior, appearance or clothing. Sonck approaches these exceptional personages in a discreet and empathetic manner, allowing them to be portrayed favorably. Sonck himself is inspired by the pre-war anthropological portraits of the German August Sander (1876-1964). Often his work is compared to that of the American Diane Arbus (1923-1971) known all over the world for her portraits of people in society's margin.‎

‎, Hannibal Books, 2023 PB+, 280 x 230 mm, 192 pages . ENG edition, with illustrations in color / b/w, NEW. ISBN 9789464666700.‎

‎First catalogue to offer an overview of Georgia's rich cultural history Thanks to its location between two continents, Georgia has traditionally formed a bridge between East and West. A Story of Encounters reflects the exceptional art, culture, and history of the country from the Neolithic to the eighteenth century. Especially in the ?golden age? of united Georgia, between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, the country experienced an unprecedented cultural and economic boom. This book shows how the turbulent history and the many exchanges along the major trade and silk routes at this crossroads of Europe and Asia resulted in an unimaginably rich heritage, which has remained largely unexposed until now. Refined goldsmith?s art from the Bronze Age, wine ? the country?s oldest cultural asset ? and original visual arts: Georgia offers many unexpected treasures, which are shown in detail for the first time. This book accompanies the exhibition Georgia: A Story of Encounters, which runs at the Art & History Museum in Brussels from 27 October 2023 to 18 February 2024, and is part of the Europalia arts festival.‎
