This catalogue contains entries on fifteenth- and sixteenth- (and one seventeenth-) century German (and Austrian) paintings in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, both German and Austrian. Entries are arranged alphabetically by artist and there is a short biography and bibliography for each artist. Individual entries follow the model established by earlier systematic catalogues and full scholarly and technical information is provided for each painting. Questions of attribution, iconography, and social and religious function and context are discussed and, where relevant, comparative examples, reconstructions of altarpieces, x-radiography and infra-red reflectogram assemblies are included. The catalogue also contains the results of dendrochronological examinations of the paintings.

Although exhibitions of works by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Adolph Menzel, and Max Liebermann have enjoyed great popularity in Germany in recent years, never before has a show held outside of the country presented nineteenth-century German art as comprehensively and attractively as this. Thanks to a new partnership formed by the three largest state museums-Berlin, Dresden, and Munich-this publication is the first to show what a rich cornucopia was produced by German painters between the French Revolution and the First World War. Additional works from more than twenty important German collections complete the volume.nThe selection of about 150 masterpieces, ranging from Classicism to Romanticism and Realism, demonstrates how German painters examined very different themes from European history and literature, how they traveled throughout Europe, and how they influenced other countries with their artistic ideas. Nineteenth-century German painting was truly European
