‎Boccaccio and the Consolation of Literature‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, approx. x + 216 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888442291.‎

‎Summary The reader of Boccaccio's voluminous writings, from the early Filocolo through the Decameron and to the later Epistles, cannot help but marvel at the pervasive engagement with the power and reach of consolation. Time and again, his protagonists suffer heartache and tribulation and seek comfort in the words of others or, significantly, in the reading of literature. These scenes are accompanied, tellingly, by the author's own declarations for the care and solace of his readers. Although scholars have long recognized its importance, this wide-ranging and multifaceted exploration of the consolatory value of literature has not received the attention it deserves. Boccaccio and the Consolation of Literature is the first sustained study of Boccaccio's consoling fictions as well as his reflections on the way literature can, and should, offer solace. Across five interlocking chapters, the book analyzes the affective, exemplary, and cognitive modes of consolation that mark the poet's works; but it also underlines the critical dialogue with the ancient and medieval traditions Boccaccio inherits. While his narratives introduce figures and tropes that expound Stoic, Boethian, and Dantesque views of consolation - calling to overcome sorrow through curbing the passions that lead to grief - Boccaccio repeatedly dramatizes the limits of these traditions. In laying bare these limits and inviting readers instead to find comfort in shared sorrow or in the active pursuit of worldly desires Boccaccio fashions a new vision of consolatio for the later Middle Ages.‎

‎Ghost of Boccaccio Writings on Famous Women in Renaissance Italy,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Hardback, XIV+254 p., 10 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503521909.‎

‎This major study looks at the heritage and literary transformation of Giovanni Boccaccio?s De mulieribus claris in late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth-century Italy. The monograph is the first full-length study of the new elaborations of women?s role and potential that were being developed in the north Italian courts in this period. The Ghost of Boccaccio presents a sustained textual analysis of a selection of male-authored texts. It treats these texts as highly specific events in the development of the querelle des femmes, or ?the woman question?, providing an important and often neglected Italian context for this question. By analysing these texts together in one volume, this study places them firmly on the scholarly map. They represent an extraordinary variety of voices seeking to be heard about the status of women in Renaissance Italy, ranging from the most conservative to the truly radical. They provide vital perspectives on constructions of women in the Renaissance. A number of these texts also represent a crucial moment in the development of intellectual strategies to challenge the dominant gender ideologies of Renaissance and early modern Europe. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of Renaissance history and culture, Italian studies, neo-Latin studies, and gender studies. Languages : English, Italian.‎
