Rockefeller dont les aspirations philanthropique avait été inspiré par la vision médicale progressive de William Osler .Depuis lors, l'Institut Rockefeller (1230, avenue York, New York) a été l'un des principaux centre du monde de la recherche biomédicale et plus de 20 prix Nobel ont été associés avec elle, à commencer par Alexis Carrel en 1912 et Karl Landsteiner en 1930.""En 1955, Rockefeller a élargi sa mission pour inclure l'éducation, en admettant sa première classe d'étudiants de troisième cycle.
