"Utilisant les brochures et pamphlets de l'époque, B. B. dégage tout d'abord dans cet ouvrage d'une grande originalité les sources de la pensée révolutionnaire américaine. Puis il montre comment, durant les décennies qui précédèrent la guerre d'indépendance, l'attitude de la métropole vis- à-vis de ses colonies renforça chez les chefs révolutionnaires la conviction selon laquelle ils devaient lutter contre une conspiration visant à les priver de leur liberté. Enfin, il rappelle les principaux problèmes que la jeune République dut s'attacher à résoudre et les solutions qu'elle leur apporta." (Revue française de science politique, 1968)
