This catalogue tells the extraordinary story of the Italian primitives reunited with other early paintings on the opening of the Musée du Petit Palais, Avignon in 1976, all from the Roman collector Giovanni Pietro, Marquis Campana, whose determination to build a collection of Italian art led to imprudent borrowing and condemnation to twenty years in the galleys. The collection was confiscated of by the Roman authorities, and eventually purchased by Napoleon III, who divided it between the Louvre and provincial museums. Text in French.
