Published in: Transactions of the Linnean Society of London.William Elford Leach (1791-1836) made this fundamental contribution to carcinology in the short time that he was active in zoology (between 1813 and 1821). Leach was also important in introducing the continental ‘’natural system of classification’’ in England, which resulted in a much sounder supraspecific classification. In this paper he does that brillantly for the Crustacea.
