Tony Herbert (1902-1959) compiled the most consistent collection of Flemish Expressionism. He concentrated mainly on the work of six artists: Jean Brusselmans, Gust De Smet, Constant Permeke, Edgard Tytgat, Frits Van den Berghe and Rik Wouters. However, Tony Herbert was not only an avid collector of their best works, but also an influential promoter of their art. The exhibition reassembles the most important paintings, sculptures, drawings and archival pieces from this historic Collection. Many works are on public display for the first time in a long time. This publication brings together the most important works from the historic Collection and explores the significance of the Collector for the recognition of modern art in Belgium and abroad. The book includes new text contributions by Tanguy Eeckhout, Laurence Van Kerkhoven and Virginie Devillez

Sinds hun jeugdjaren vormen deze drie grote Vlaamse expressionisten een trio, dat later door de Brusselse galaries Selection en Le Centaure gesteund en gepromoot is. Tijdens het interbellum (1918-1940) zijn zij de pioniers en koplopers van het expressionisme in Belgie. Permeke is de schilder van het boerenleven, De Smet van het volkse leven en het werk van Van de Berghe heeft metafysische en surreele trekken. Verschillen maar ook raakpunten komen in dit boek aan bod. Dit is het tweede boek, na de publicatie over Rik Wouters, in de reeks over het kunstbezit in het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen
