Erste und einzige Ausgabe. - Temple (1739 - 1796) studierte in Edinburgh in der gleichen Klasse mit James Boswell mit dem er lebenslang freundschaftlich verbunden war obwoh von grundverschiedenem Temparament. Nach dem Bankrott seines Vaters sah sich Temple gezwungen seinen Lebensunterhalt als Landpfarrer zu verdienen. Daneben schrieb er populärphilosophische Essais die jedoch über den Horizont eines gewönlichen Landgeistlichen hinausgehen.
