Anthropoid busts of Deir el Medineh. Analyses, Catalogue, Appendices and other Sites and Collections. DFIFAO 49.
<p>Since an anthropoid bust apparently entered Europe as early as 1798, these small sculptures with human heads on aniconic supports with shoulder-like tops have attracted the attention of collectors and scholars. Over the last 130 years they have been given many modern names that attempt to identify their function, but only a few are inscribed with ancient Egyptian names of persons or deities. The busts were excavated in quantity at Deir el Medineh in the first half of the 20th century. Busts have also been found in or can be reasonably connected with 16 additional sites along the Nile, from the Sudan to the Egyptian delta, and now total nearly two hundred, one excavated at a new site in 2009. This volume presents all the anthropoid busts known as of the end of 2010 in a catalogue raisonné of the 71 Deir el Medineh objects, four appendices of the other busts, and five analytic chapters. Depuis la découverte en 1798 par l’Europe du premier buste anthropoïde, ces figures à tête humaine surmontant un support aniconique, dont la partie supérieure joue le rôle des épaules, ont suscité l’intérêt des amateurs d’art et des savants. Seul un petit nombre porte le nom d’un particulier ou d’une divinité. Diverses appellations modernes leur ont été attribuées au cours des dernières décennies, susceptibles de rendre la réalité de leur fonction. La plupart des bustes furent découverts à Deir al-Medîna lors des fouilles menées dans la première moitié du XXe siècle, mais on peut estimer à 16 le nombre des autres sites dont ils proviennent – qu’ils y aient été effectivement trouvés ou qu’on le déduise – s’échelonnant du Soudan jusqu’au delta. Cet ouvrage rassemble pour la première fois la totalité des bustes connus en 2010 – près de deux cents - dont l’un mis au jour tout récemment, en 2009. Les 71 originaires de Deir al-Medîna sont présentés sous la forme d’un catalogue raisonné, les autres font l’objet de quatre annexes. Summary Institutions under royal control included not only the king's royal residences and the royal chapels attached to them, but also magnificent convent-palaces and individual monasteries belonging to specific religious orders with close affiliations to the Spanish Crown. These Spanish Royal Sites, a diverse global network that helped to shape the Spanish Monarchy politically and socially in the seventeenth century, extended across the different kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula and beyond to other territories in Europe, America and Asia under Spanish rule. The religious practices that occurred there were an essential aspect of studying the justification of power, the pre-eminence of (ecclesiastical and temporal) institutions and, in the case of the Spanish Monarchy, its relations with the Holy See. This volume brings together scholars from various humanities disciplines, opening up novel avenues of research for studying the organization of royal institutions in the different kingdoms of the Habsburg Spanish Monarchy, especially in questions related to religion and royal piety. Particular attention is paid to the under-researched area of Royal Sites in Catalonia, Valencia, Portugal, Sardinia and the Viceroyalty of Peru.
