Droz of Paris will publish it under d'Ardenne's name only, to satisfy requirements of her degree at Liège; but for this, the book would appear as a joint work by d'Ardenne and Tolkien. Simonne d'Ardenne herself privately refers to it as a joint effort, and some of Tolkien's colleagues will recognize his contribution. The Seinte Iulienne probably contains more of his views on early Middle English than anything he will publish under his own name. rnAlso, page 198 :rnE.V. For a year she lived with the Tolkien family at 20 Northmoor Road and became a close friend of the family, particularly Priscilla Tolkien. Her thesis (published under her own name in 1936) earned her a doctorate from the University of Liège and two years later she was taken on as a professor of comparative grammar. In November 1937, she produced a French translation of the first version of Farmer Giles of Ham (not published until 1975) and was suggested by Tolkien to his publisher as a possible translator of The Hobbit, which had just been published.rnD'Ardenne became a close friend of the Tolkien family, and J.R.R. visited her in Belgium in the 1950s.rn

This volume catalogues and discusses all the known representations by Rubens of the Life of Christ after the Passion, and the material is sufficiently varied to convey a brilliant impression of the energy, inventiveness and technical and artistic mastery - the art of Rubens. This volume catalogues and discusses all the known representations by Rubens of the Life of Christ after the Passion. It includes the little-known group of paintings and drawings of Christ Triumphant over Sin and Death, as well as the various depictions of the Conversion of Saint Paul, the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin, the Last Judgement, the Fall of the Damned and the Assumption of the Blessed. They range from small panels to the largest works Rubens ever painted and count amongst the most popular and influential of his compostions. In his catalogue Dr. Freedberg presents a considerable amount of new evidence relating to their evolution and patronage, while separate sections are devoted to particularly important and unusual aspects of their iconography. The paintings that Rubens devoted to the theme of the youth of Christ are among the most impressive and influential examples of art that expressed Roman Catholic spirituality as reasserted at the Council of Trent. The vast majority of these works are his numerous images of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi. The oldest sources for these and other scenes from Christ's youth are of course the accounts of the Gospels, but these were usefully completed by several supplementary descriptions, more especially the Apocrypha, patristic literature, and the pious legends woven around the birth of Christ in the course of the Middle Ages. In his interpretations of the scenes from Christ's youth, Rubens built to a large extent on a pictorial tradition that had developed in the Low Countries and Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, in which mediaeval views and patterns originating from Northern Europe had merged with those of the Italian Renaissance. In Rubens's representations of scenes from Christ's youth, and especially in his many interpretations of the themes of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi, the ideas of Counter-Reformation iconography found their most explicit embodiment in the clear Eucharistic connotations that are present in these works Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard
