Het oeuvre van El Greco (1541-1614) is eeuwenlang in de vergeethoek geraakt. In 1908 plaatste de kunsthistoricus Manuel Bartolome Cossio hem echter weer helemaal op de voorgrond. Dit boek reconstrueert de indrukwekkende herontdekking van El Greco en bestudeert het aandeel van de belangrijkste hoofdfiguren daarin. Tevens schetst het aan de hand van een keuze van markante schilderijen op meeslepende wijze El Greco's artistieke ontwikkeling.El Greco's onaantastbare status als een van de grondleggers van de Spaanse school is niet altijd even vanzelfsprekend geweest. In de periode rond zijn dood in 1614 valt Europa voor het Caravaggisme, een stijl met sterk naturalistische inslag die zowat de antipode vormt van El Greco's unieke manieristische talent. Zijn werk raakt snel uit de mode en verzeilt in eeuwenlange vergetelheid. Tot kunsthistoricus Manuel Bartolome Cossio in 1908 uitpakt met een monografie van formaat die El Greco in een klap weer op het voorplan brengt. De alerte kunstverzamelaar Markies de la Vega-Inclan wijdt in 1910 in El Greco's eigen Toledo een museum aan hem en de reputatie van de schilder stijgt naar het zenit - even snel als ze ooit was verschrompeld. Naast een reconstructie van het aandeel van de hoofdfiguren in deze spectaculaire herontdekking biedt de tentoonstelling een boeiend overzicht van El Greco's artistieke evolutie op basis van een selectie van markante schilderijen, waaronder de De tranen van de heilige Petrus en het verbluffende Christus wordt ontkleed. Orgelpunt van de tentoonstelling vormt de ultieme reeks Apostelen - El Greco's artistieke testament - die door een vrijgevochten vormentaal en opvallend kleurgebruik verrassend modern aandoet. Let wel: na de passage in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten verdwijnen de Apostoles definitief naar het El Grecomuseum in Toledo..
