Summary The creation and dissolution of empires has been a constant feature of human history from ancient times through the present day. Establishing new identities and new power relationships, empires also irrevocably altered social structures and the material culture on which those social structures were partly based. The political activities of empires are materially reflected in the movement of objects from periphery to center (and vice versa) and in the formation and display of collections which represent the potential for the production and the dissemination of knowledge. Imperial collecting practices tell stories that are complementary to and go beyond the classical sources of official history, the statistics of social history and even the narratives of collective or individual oral history. Building on previous work on European and Colonial object histories, this collection of essays-for the first time-approaches the subject of collecting and empires from a global and inclusive comparative perspective by addressing selection of the greatest empires the world has known from Han China to Hellenistic Greece to Aztec Mexico to the Third Reich. Il y est ainsi question des « limites et grandeurs des empires », de « plusieurs chemins terrestres » mais aussi dun peu dhistoire avec « Un abrégé des naissances, vies et morts des fondateurs des grands empires » ou encore le climat. Tous les continents sont abordés : LEurope, LAsie, LAfrique, LAmérique du Nord et du Sud mais aussi la Terre Australe. This volume is a collection of reflections from leading senior and junior historians regarding the merits of historical comparativism in the field of Iberian history. The first purpose of the book is to encourage a dialogue between scholars of the Iberian Empires and to foster a reconsider how they see the broader history of the early modern world in light of recent historiography. The second aim of the book is to prompt scholars of other regions in global history to consider the recent literature on the Iberian Empires anew, to move beyond the tropes of the Black Legend and narrative of growth, splendour, and decline, and to study those imbrications had connected disparate parts of the world and which the postcolonial turn has unearthed. In a series of articles and interviews, contributors were encouraged to consider the role of linguistic divides in the growth of historiographical strands, and to speak plainly about the possible siloes that have emerged in the field. Some slight foxing) (Note: The French historian, philosopher and orientalist Constantin François de Chassebuf de Volney, 1757-1820, is one of the founding fathers of the Black Athena theory. After a trip to the Middle East in 1782 he suggested that the ancient Egyptians were originally black Africans, and that the Egyptians of his time were mulats with mixed blood. 'Les anciens Égyptiens étaient de vrais Nègres de l'espèce de tous les naturels d'Afrique; et dès-lors, on explique comment leur sang, allié depuis plusieurs siècles à celui des Romains et des Grecs, a dû perdre l'intensité de sa première couleur, en conservant cependant l'empreinte de son moule originel (...); de penser que cette race d'hommes noirs, aujourd'hui notre esclave et l'objet de nos mépris, est celle-là même à qui nous devons nos arts, nos sciences, et jusqu'à l'usage de la parole'. 'L'auteur se met en scène sur les ruines de Palmyre; et là il se livre à de profondes méditations sur la destruction de tant d'empires à qui leur puissance colossale semblait promettre une éternelle durée, et qui n'en ont pas moins obéi à cette loi de la nature qui veut que tout périsse. Dans ce même ouvrage, Volney établit la nécessité de la tolérance religieuse, reconnue aujourd'hui par tous les esprits éclairés. (...)
