One of the most popular painters of the Golden Age, known for his ironic and humorous view of the world. However, Steen also painted genre pieces with a serious side, some highly original portraits and particularly interesting history pieces that vary widely in style and atmosphere, from the quiet and intimate to the large and melodramatic.
