‎Erste holländische Ausgabe, im gleichen Jahr kurz vor der deutschen Erstausgabe erschienen. Nach der französischen Originalausgabe war die holländische Übersetzung eine der ersten Übersetzungen. Very rare first Dutch translation of the Swiss philantropist, who received the Nobel Peace Prize award in 1901. Known nowadays as the man whose ideas led to the organization of the International Red Cross and Switzerland as a humanitarian state. This work ‘in which Dunant describes the conditions at the Battle of Solferino, prompted the eventual acceptance of the Geneva Convention in 1863 and the formation of the International Red Cross’ (Heirs of Hippocrates, 1945). The Dutch translation is the first translation, shortly followed by a German- and later an English version. "Dr Basting was much more than just Dunant's Dutch translator: without Dr. Basting's political commitment, Red Cross probably wouldn't exist. No copy of this exceedingly scarce and highly important Dutch translation of Dunant’s seminal text in the Swiss National Library. Comp. Garrison & Morton 2166; cf. Suzanne Oswald: Henri Dunant. SJW 449; Gagnebin, Bernard & Marc Gazay: A la rencontre de Henry Dunant (pour les ill. du Dr. Basting). Sehr selten sogar notre National-Bibliothek hat kein Exemplar. Image disp.‎
