His enthusiasm and organizing ability served to arouse interest in astronomy and to put its practical aspects on a firm footing. Today he is remembered (although frequently with his name misspelled ) for 'Baily's beads', an effect seen during solar eclipses by many men before Baily, but never so vividly described." (D.S.B.).
